General Product Information
Adequan comes in two variants, one for dogs and one for horses. In either case, Adequan is used to treat symptoms of arthritis in animals. Adequan is available only upon prescription from a qualified veterinarian, and requires a syringe for administration. In addition to controlling the symptoms associated with both degenerative and traumatic arthritis, Adequan is also commonly prescribed as a postsurgical medication. Adequan begins to work in as little as a few hours, and continues to have an effect for up to three days.
Adequan is classified as a DMOAD or Disease-Modifying Osteoarthritis Drug, and it is the only drug of its type that has passed the approval of the FDA.

Adequan Canine
Adequan works by inhibiting enzymes in the body that damage the cartilage in the joints. This medication therefore reduces inflammation, and even increases the viscosity of the fluids in the joint, aiding in flexibility and suppleness. Numerous clinical studies have shown that Adequan can considerably reduce pain by modifying the cycle of the arthritic condition. In the process, it encourages the repair of cartilage and reduces joint damage caused by osteoarthritis.
Although cases of Adequan overdose are quite rare, they may occur in animals with a predisposition to allergies. In the event of an overdose, you may notice even more joint pain than usual, which may or may not be accompanied by swelling and difficulty in walking in your animals.
Adequan should not be given to animals that are breeding, pregnant, or nursing. In addition, you should first consult with a veterinarian if you’re planning to give Adequan to animals that have a history of kidney or liver conditions, or blood clotting.
Adequan is manufactured by Luitpold, and it comes in generic form as Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan or PSGAG. Adequan for canines is available in boxes containing two 25 mL vials. The solution is administered into the animal by intramuscular injection, twice a week for four weeks.
Possible Side Effects As Acknowledged By The Manufacturer
Cases of side effects associated with the use of Adequan are quite rare, although they may occur in certain animals. The most common side effects that you may notice are severe allergic reactions, which may be indicated by swelling in the face, hives, unusual scratching, diarrhea, vomiting, and cold limbs. In severe cases, you may also notice signs of bleeding in your animal, typically from the nose or in the feces. If you do notice these symptoms, you should cease use of Adequan and immediately consult with a veterinarian.
Customer Reviews
Some of the most common reviews of Adequan comment favorably on its overall effectiveness and comparatively low cost. Most of the reviews appeared to be overwhelmingly positive, with many users having given Adequan to their pet for a number of weeks with no adverse side effects.
One customer reports using Adequan on a Labrador that had been suffering from arthritis in the front elbows. The dog had previously had a lot of trouble getting up and walking about, and arthritis was the diagnosis. This customer was first suggested a procedure that would cost well over $3000 for the entire treatment, when Adequan was offered as an alternative. This customer was sufficiently encouraged to try it out due to the much lower cost, and she reports having had satisfactory results even after a year later. She now only has to give her pet one injection every month as a preventive measure.
One other customer reports having the same trouble with her pet for a number of months, and he was surprised to find out that Adequan provided relief in as little as a few hours. The dog has since recovered fully from his arthritis, and hasn’t required maintenance shots either.
