General Product Information
Advantage Multi is a topical medication that is intended for once a month application. It has both insecticide and parasiticide qualities by way of the two main active ingredients, Imidacloprid and Moxidectin, respectively.
Advantage Multi is primarily intended for the treatment and prevention of heartworms, hookworms, roundworms, and flea infestation in both dogs and cats. Advantage Multi is available only by prescription from a qualified veterinarian. In addition, Advantage Multi also offers whipworm protection in dogs, and prevents ear mite infection in cats.

Advantage Multi
The main active ingredient in Advantage Multi, Moxidectin, effectively prevents and controls heartworm infestation by disrupting the nerve transmissions of these pests. This results in paralysis and eventual death. The other active ingredient, Imidacloprid, has a similar effect on the nervous system of fleas.
Before administering Advantage Multi to your pet, you should first make sure that you discuss with your veterinarian any existing conditions in your pet or if he or she is breeding, is pregnant, or is lactating. It has not yet been determined whether using Advantage Multi on such animals is safe.
Advantage Multi is manufactured by Bayer, and is sold in generic form as Imidacloprid and Moxidectin.
Possible Side Effects As Acknowledged By The Manufacturer
A number of side effects have been attributed to the use of Advantage Multi, particularly in animals with a previous history of allergies to other types of medications. Some of the side effects that you may notice in your pet are hives, excessive scratching, swelling in the face, and similar symptoms. In addition, your pet may also suffer from diarrhea, vomiting, and excessive salivation. In extreme cases, your pet may show symptoms of shock, and even go into a coma.
Customer Reviews
Customer reviews of Advantage Multi seem to be a mixed bag, with some customers reporting favorable results, and others being less than satisfied.
One customer reports using Advantage Multi on a Yorkie who was suffering from a severe flea infection. After a few days of treatment with Advantage Multi, the dog has remained largely free of ticks and fleas despite living in a large apartment complex with many other dogs. This pet owner was also impressed with the fact that Advantage Multi can help prevent heartworm and hookworm infestation, in addition to being an effective flea prevention medication.
One less than favorable report comes from a pet owner that brought his dog in for a regular checkup, expecting to be given his usual heartworm medication. This customer was instead given a sample of Advantage Multi as an alternative, and was quite disappointed in the results.
The dosage appeared to be too much for his tiny dog to handle for instance, and after all the trouble that they both went through, the dog has yet to be free of fleas and ticks, although he appears to be negative for heartworm infestation. This pet owner subsequently reports having gone back to his previous flea and tick medication, and will not be using Advantage Multi again.
A Chihuahua owner on the other hand reports using Advantage Multi on her dog that had hair falling out in patches. This dog also constantly scratched and licked her paws, which was a clear sign that there were fleas present. After using several different anti-flea products with little to no success, this pet owner was encouraged to try out Advantage Multi, and has reported favorable results ever since. This customer has since recommended Advantage Multi to several of her friends with dogs that have flea and tick problems.
